Obama’s auto task force wants to avoid bankruptcy



Despite calls from Republican senators such as John McCain to let flailing auto companies go bankrupt, President Barack Obama’s auto task force has said that their goal is to solve the industry’s problems rather than file for bankruptcy.

This includes an intensive restructuring program that involves meeting with auto industry executives, auto suppliers, debt holders and officials from the UAW. Following these meetings, the task force will “determine whether these companies are viable and if so on what basis the government should invest additional taxpayer resources.”

Currently GM and Chrysler have already received a total of over $17 billion from the federal government, but both companies are still seeking more aid.
